Colour Grade: What the Letters Mean

On every SGL natural diamond certificate, colour is graded from D (colourless) to Z (noticeable warm colour). Here is a simple buyer’s guide.

Colour Range
What It Means for Buyers
D, E, F
Colourless and the highest colour grade. Very rare and best for platinum or white gold settings.
G, H, I, J
Near-colourless and the most popular colour range. Looks colourless to the naked eye and offers great value.
K, L, M
Faint colour with a slight warm tint that is easier to notice. Often paired with yellow gold settings, where the warm colour matches the metal.
N–Z
Noticeable colour with a clear warm tint. These diamonds are much more affordable. Some buyers choose them because of their warm or golden colour.

Clarity Grade: What the Terms Mean

Clarity grades are checked under 10x magnification. Here’s a simple explanation of each clarity grade:

Clarity Grade
Plain-English Meaning
FL / IF (Flawless / Internally Flawless)
No inclusions or surface marks are visible under 10x magnification. This grade is very rare and found in less than 1% of diamonds.
VVS1 / VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included)
Minute inclusions are extremely difficult to see under 10x magnification. Excellent choice for high-end jewellery.
VS1 / VS2 (Very Slightly Included)
Small inclusions that are hard to spot under 10x magnification. This is a very popular choice because it offers a great balance of appearance and value.
SI1 / SI2 (Slightly Included)
Noticeable inclusions under 10x magnification. SI1 usually looks clean without magnification, while SI2 may have visible inclusions.
I1 / I2 / I3 (Included)
Visible inclusions without magnification. I1 may still be a good choice for fashion jewellery, while I2 and I3 have more noticeable flaws.
