SGL Labs is a leading provider of lab-grown diamond certification services .

Our certificates provide a comprehensive analysis of laboratory-grown diamonds, including their origin, quality, and authenticity.

Our lab-grown diamond report contains the analytical result of the diamond’s 4Cs, including carat weight, color, clarity, and cut.

In addition, the certificate provides information on the diamond’s origin (lab grown or natural), and a plotting diagram of the diamond’s physical characteristics, both internal and external.

At SGL Labs, we are committed to providing impartial and unbiased evaluations of lab-grown diamonds. Our diamond certificates are widely accepted in the industry and provide consumers with the confidence they need when purchasing lab-grown diamonds.

A lab-grown diamond report is SGL’s certification of a laboratory-created diamond’s quality, origin, and authenticity. It confirms the diamond’s 4Cs (carat weight, clarity, colour, and cut) and its growth method. It also shows a diagram of the diamond’s internal and external features. It is widely accepted by jewellers and buyers across the industry.

SGL uses the same 4Cs to grade lab-grown and natural diamonds, so buyers can compare quality on equal terms. Every report confirms the diamond’s origin using SGL’s detection tools. These tools help tell lab-grown diamonds apart from natural ones very accurately.

Our network of 25 labs across India (21 locations), Dubai, London, Dhaka, and Kathmandu certifies lab-grown diamonds. Each lab follows the same blind grading, client privacy, and security checks as we do for natural diamond reports. This helps jewellers and buyers trust the same standard across every type of diamond.

What's Included in an SGL Lab-Grown Diamond Report?

Every SGL lab-grown diamond report contains the same core grading data as a natural diamond report, plus origin-specific details unique to laboratory-created stones.

Report Element
What It Tells You
Unique SGL Report Number
Your diamond has a unique number that you can use to verify your SGL certificate online anytime.

HPHT vs CVD: What Your SGL Report Confirms

Lab-grown diamonds are created using two methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both methods create diamonds with the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, and SGL grades both using the same 4Cs scale.

Method
How it works
On your SGL report
HPHT
Uses extreme pressure and heat of about 1,500°C inside a press to recreate natural diamond formation.
Growth method given on request; graded the same as any lab-grown stone.
CVD
Makes a diamond layer by layer using carbon-rich gas heated to around 800°C inside a vacuum chamber.
Growth method is shown on request; graded the same as any lab-grown stone.

Neither method changes whether a diamond is genuine or how it is graded. SGL’s report reflects the diamond’s actual graded quality, no matter which process created it. For a full breakdown of each method, read our guide: What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

How SGL Verifies Lab-Grown Origin

SGL checks whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown using spectroscopic and photoluminescence testing not just visual inspection. This testing happens before grading and does not depend on the client’s declared origin. The “Nature of Origin” field reflects a verified result, not a claimed one. Read more about how lab-grown diamonds are identified on our blog.

Colour & Clarity Grading for Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same D-to-Z colour scale and FL-to-I3 clarity scale used for natural diamonds

Grade Range
What It Means for Buyers
D–F (Colourless)
Highest colour grade, rare, and a great choice for white gold or platinum.
G–J (Near-Colourless)
Most popular range, looks colourless to the eye.
K–M (Faint)
Shows a slight warm tint, often paired with yellow gold.
N–Z (Noticeable)
Has a warm tone that is easy to see and is more affordable.
FL–VVS (Flawless to Very Very Slightly Included)
No inclusions are visible to the eye, making it high-end.
VS–SI (Very Slightly to Slightly Included)
Shows minor inclusions, offers good value, and is a popular choice.
I1–I3 (Included)
Shows visible inclusions and is more affordable.

Clarity grades are assessed under 10x magnification using the same scale as natural diamonds. For the full explanation of each clarity grade, see the Clarity Grade guide on our Diamond Reports page.

Why Certification Matters for Lab-Grown Diamonds

Choosing a certified lab-grown diamond matters just as much as choosing the diamond itself. Here’s what an SGL report protects you from.

What You’re Protecting
Why It Matters to You
Origin Confirmation
A lab-grown diamond looks just like a natural one without lab testing. An SGL report gives buyers verified proof of origin instead of just trusting the seller’s word.
Fair Pricing
Lab-grown diamond prices depend on the carat, colour, and clarity. A certified report helps buyers avoid paying natural-diamond prices for an uncertified stone. It also helps avoid overpaying for a lab-grown stone with grades that are claimed to be higher.
Resale & Insurance
Jewellers, insurers, and resale buyers need a certified report to confirm what they are valuing. An SGL certificate makes the process easy.
Growth Method Transparency
Buyers increasingly want to know how their diamond was made. SGL lists the growth method on request, giving buyers complete details about their purchase.

Lab-Grown Diamond Report Terminology

FAQs

A lab-grown diamond report is a certificate that provides grading details and important information about a laboratory-grown diamond. SGL certifies lab-grown diamonds by grading their 4Cs – cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, along with origin, proportions, and other grading information.

SGL grades lab-grown diamonds by providing information about diamonds carat weight, color, clarity, cut, measurements, proportions, fluorescence, and plotting information. The report also confirms whether the diamond is lab-created and provides extra verification details for transparency and authenticity.

Certification for lab-grown diamonds helps in verifying a diamond’s authenticity, quality, and grading details. A certified lab-grown diamond report gives clear information about the diamond features and helps buyers make informed buying decisions more confidently.

Gemological laboratories grade lab-grown diamonds by following the same 4Cs grading standards as natural diamonds, covering cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. During the grading process, laboratories such as SGL check additional diamond characteristics like proportions, symmetry, and fluorescence, along with the standard grading details.

Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the same 4Cs system as natural diamonds, including cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. However, lab-grown diamond reports may also include additional information related to the diamond’s origin and characteristics.
